Everyone has run into that situation where friends show up at your door and you find yourself in the midst of an impromptu party. Suddenly you’re scrambling around for something to serve, and the only things visible are the last few drops of Bombay Sapphire (shouldn’t have had that second gin and tonic) and that bottle of wine you’ve been saving for a special occasion.
In order to avoid such a disaster I’ve taken to picking up a bottle of Black Opal Cabernet Merlot when I’m at the grocery store. Pricing usually runs around $10, but for one reason or another I’ve been able to find it on sale for $7. Such a steal!
Wine connoisseurs may turn up their noses, but as someone who drinks wine on a regular basis, Black Opal passes my sniff test. It’s a smooth red with soft tannins and nice berry notes. (Soft tannins meaning it doesn’t have that shudder inducing bite. Just think back to your college days and Franzia)
Next time you’re scanning the rows of wine at your grocery store, pick up a bottle or two. Drink one that night and save the other for those last minute occasions. Your wallet and your friends will thank you.

Steph - this is so great! We have a little bloomin Rachel in the works…
Here’s a new wine to try if you can find it: Steele Winery- California of course! Catfish Vineyards - 2005 Zinfandel (special occasion - runs about $19.95 but can be ordered straight from the winery.) Delicious with anything
