From Rationing Comes the Sweetest Invention

Nutella-from NutellaUSA.com

While many people are aware of the wonderfood Nutella, it has come to my attention that there are quite a few still living under a rock!  Allow me to shine some light beneath that boulder and introduce the greatest product to come out of World War Two Italian chocolate rationing.

I was recently at a party where they put a jar of Nutella (I can hear my mother gasping…yes mother, they put the actual JAR on the table!) next to a basket of pasteries, pretzel sticks and a plate of fruit and poof…an instant party hit was formed!  Another inexpensive and quick way to make a lot of people happy.

My preferred way to enjoy the hazelnut chocolate spread is on a banana sandwich using cinnamon swirl bread.  Such a guilty pleasure!  I’m willing to bet a 6-year-old would eat brussel sprouts if they were dipped in the stuff.

Moral of this story:  Go out and buy yourself some (look in the peanut butter aisle of your grocery store), and don’t feel guilty if you’re caught red-handed with nothing but the jar and a spoon.  Those of us who’ve know about Nutella have been there before!

What a great post about Nutella! And I was happy to go into the kitchen this morning and see your jar sitting on the counter next to a banana!

You speak truth, my friend. Nutella is the food of the gods. I will try one of your banana sandwiches for breakfast tomorrow…

I totally agree with the taste of the product but still don’t want the jar on the table!

I know this is an old post, but I finally bought my first jar of Nutella! Nutella has been in the back of my mind every since this blog entry was written. Even though I’ve never had it before, I woke up this morning with a craving for a Nutella and banana sandwhich, and I felt compelled to go to Kroger and pick up a jar. Based on your description, I had a pretty good idea about what it would taste like and I knew I would like it. The constistency of the spread was a lot creamier than I expected, but its smoothness made for easy spreading. The sandwich was delicious and lived up to the hype. Nutella is definately going to become a pantry staple!
