One of the smartest and most useful things that I did in my college career was sign up for Botany & Viticulture, AKA wine tasting.
I know what you’re thinking. Wahoo, wine tasting for college credit! Not quite, but the class was 3 hours long, and each session we tasted 6 wines, 3 red and 3 white. $100 bottles were tasted next to $10 bottles, and we were never told the price until after writing down our evaluations.
On one particular night we covered Rieslings. This is where I discovered Covey Run. As fate would have it, we were tasting 2 expensive bottles (around $100) next to the $7 bottle of CR. I of course, did not know the prices and going against my knack for liking things beyond my budget I preferred the under dog of the bunch.
Ever since that fateful day, a beautiful friendship was formed. Covey Run is a light, fruitful and sweet wine from Washington State that has pleased both me and my white wine drinking friends. The $7 it costs to take home a bottle is a steal, and I always feel a bit guilty when walking away with my purchase. For now I’ll resist the urge to call the winery and question their sanity for charging such prices. I’m no fool.
I’ve found bottles at my local SuperFresh (they have a great wine selection), and in the Midwest on the shelves of Kroger. Check with the person who runs your local wine department, and sometimes you can convince them to make a special order. Nobody will fault you for requesting a great tasting wine that most can afford!
