No Love for Love Cafe

I’m thinking the same exact thing.  Sometimes there’s nothing better than an icing covered gooey cupcake.  They’re just the right size to satisfy your sugar craving but small enough to keep guilt away…for those of us who have no self control when it comes to all things sweet and delicious.

You can thank the Cupcake Queen for the picture above.  Check out her blog for great recipes or thoughts on the bite sized confections.

To get to the point of this post, I’m always looking for a place to buy a great cupcake, and when I heard about cakelove/love cafe I was uber excited.  Genius…a place that has a cupcake bar!  Why didn’t I think of that?

I’ve been 3 times now, and I have to say….though I soo desperatly want to shower Love Cafe with foodie love and praise, I just can’t.  I’ve tried the crunchy feet, toffee crunch cake, the cupcake bar and the Neil’s hat trick.  That’s a lot of sugar….I know.  I wasn’t kidding when I said I have no self control!

Each time, the cake or confection was dry and unsatisfactory.  Not to mention, one little slice of cake was $7!  Eeek.  From what I tasted, going to the store and getting a box of Duncan Hines would be more economical and yield better results!

Writing this post is killing me, because Love Cafe has the inspirational story and great concept behind it.  It’s a neighboorhood spot that I would love, love, love to get behind.  (That word is coming up a lot in this post.)  Keep in mind, I’m only talking about Love Cafe here.  Not Cake Love.  They are connected, however Cake Love is strickly for purchasing entire cakes.  Love Cafe sells sweets and cake by the slice.  Perhaps Cake Love is much better,  I have yet to find out.

With great sadness, I have given up on Love Cafe for the time being.  To satisfy my sugary cravings I’ve found myself wanting the macaroons from Patesserie Pupon, a cute French bakery in Georgetown.  I will return to Love Cafe someday, and I am hoping to prove this post wrong.  But for all of you that have asked me about this establishment, you now have my honest opinion.

I don’t know how you can screw up the concept behind Love Cafe, but they somehow managed to do it. I recommend avoiding this place.

I truly admire the story behind CakeLove and Love Cafe. Perhaps it tastes different because it uses more natural ingredients unlike the presertive-filled Duncan Hines. Remember to enjoy their delicious cupcakes at room temp only.

I was very sad when I visited Love Cafe as well: the service was slow, the food was so-so, and the cupcakes were not as delish as I had hoped. I do love (ha) the story behind it, though!

Agreed. Love Cafe is unimpressive. However, I’m big into working in cafes and Love Cafe is a great place to do so. Favorites like Tryst and Bus Boys and Poets have way too many folks accessing their wifi networks at the same time for web heads like me to get anything done fast online.

Lastly, my first job in HS was at a bakery. I learned the secret to eating cupcakes there: pull the bottom off midway and put it on top of the icing. Now you have a cupcake sandwich and won’t get icing all over your face!
