Most days, I muster up the energy to throw something in my bag to satisfy my hunger come lunch time. Somedays I’m lucky and have leftovers from cooking or a good dinner out, others I slum it and heat up a trusty lean cuisine. (You really can’t beat paying $2 for an entire lunch, some of which aren’t half bad)
Occasionally, there are those days when I don’t care about a budget and just want to get out of the office to spice up the day. Lucky for me, a few blocks up I’ve spotted a haven for Greek food lovers.
Port of Pireaus Market is located on the corners of 13th & I Streets NW just across from Franklin Square. The place is squeaky clean, which is always a plus and they have a variety of lunch options. Chicken kabobs, chicken stuffed with feta and spinach, mousakka and my personal favorite, the classic gyro, only touch on the choices you can find.
Prices are a little on the high side, running around $8 for a healthy portioned gyro sandwich, but you won’t find yourself going hungry. If you’re smart, save some $$ by skipping the drink. This is where restaurants make a lot of their mark up profit.
If I’m feeling extra cheap but still want to eat out, just across the way on the opposite corner is a little hole in the wall, Solar Cafe. They have excellent sandwiches, quesadillas, and build your own salads and I can usually get out of there for between $4-$6! (Such a bargain in this city)
Bonus: They make a good cup of coffee and have equally as cheap and satisfying breakfast sandwiches in the morning.

Port of Piraeus is one of my new favorite spots. A little pricey, but in reality not much more so than Cosi.
If you haven’t been, Philip’s, on 14th is a great sandwich place in the area. Love me some Cuban style pork…
There is a reason why Solar Cafe’s nickname is Slower Cafe…

Solar Cafe has always been quick with the salads and sandwiches, though it did take them an insanely long time to make a chai latte.
